Why should Australia’s Alpine region be on your ski/board Holiday list? Because it is the best!
Most people think of a barren desert filled with Kangaroos, Koalas and Crocodiles so it is hard to picture any level of snow making, but the truth is Australia has just about every landscape you can imagine!
So while you digest that here are some facts to take on board.
Fact 1 - Mt Kosciuszko is huge (This is a snow mountain)
Fact 2 – Australia’s mountain range starts at the very top of the country(ish) and even Grace's Tasmania right down the bottom (and there’s some snow resorts there as well) That’s big.
Fact 3 - Australian weather is spectacular usually
Weather in Australia almost always serves up a bluebird in the mountains. This may not be the highest priority when you are in the mountains because grey sky usually means more snow. However, try to tell anyone bluebird days on the hill are not the most Instagrammed, shared liked & filmed elements of your last snow holiday, seriously try….
Australian resorts are in no way setting any records for average snowfall per season but there are some glorious moments to be had. The really good part is the consistency and the very rarely do you get caught in a wild Northern hemisphere super storm!
Alec Nielsen from Genki Snow says, “You shouldn’t use total snow fall as your defining factor. While I am a powder hound at heart, there is nothing better than a fresh sunny morning in the Australian Alps followed by a few cold VB’s”
For the park rider, Australia is epic! Attracting riders and park builders from all over the world to hone their skills. This is a solid stomping ground to work it out thanks to the super consistent weather patterns
For the all mountain rider you have a choice of so many resorts across Australia, each with their own pros and cons and some of these resorts will seriously surprise you with their size and range of terrain. If you are big on Instagram, this is where you have to be!
For the après lover, a few Australian resorts spring to mind that will schnapp(s) you back to reality with world-class menu options and a selection of carefully selected alpine favourites (gluhwein, goulash etc.).
At the end of the day, you can pack a lot in to what is widely considered a short season. Consistency is key when repetition is the discipline and that is what Australia Mountains have to offer!
