Top tips on how to bag the cheapest airfares for your next holiday

  • Written by Tess Sanders Lazarus

If you are thinking about taking a holiday or doing some type of travel in the near future, you are not alone.    Australians do a lot of travel, in particular air travel.

5.33 million people travelled on Australian domestic flights in December 2018 alone.   Over 11 million people travelled overseas in 2018.   The airline industry is big business.

According to Farouk Ismail, founder of Australia's leading layby travel service, PayLater Travel, "the majority of Aussies are paying way too much for their flights."

"The best way to get the cheapest deal on flights is to book them in advance.    While this may seem simple, there is actually a bit more to it than that," Farouk added.

"If you are looking to travel overseas, you can save hundreds of dollars on your flights, if you book at least five months in advance.

"For example, if you want to travel to Seoul, Tokyo, or Hong Kong, the best time to book is up to 23 weeks in advance.  By doing this you can often grab flights that are up to 12 and 15% cheaper.

"If you want to travel to the states, for example Los Angeles, you can also get cheaper flights if you book up to 23 weeks in advance.   You can save up to 10 percent on average.

"Most international flights tend to peak price wise about a month prior to the scheduled departure dates.

"When it comes to domestic travel, there are plenty of savings to be made as well as long as you book in advance.   Some cities are better than others for advance booking discounts.

"You can save up to 20% on flights to Melbourne if you book up to 22 weeks in advance.

"Queensland is always a popular destination for many holiday goers keen to enjoy their white sand and balmy weather.    You can save up to 20% on flights if you book five months in advance.

"There are some key ways to save extra money when booking a flight and it often comes down to timing."

Farouk has put together some tips to assist people to book travel at the best time to achieve the best price.

- Always book well in advance to get access to the best deals

- Look at flights that may involve connections as often these are much cheaper than direct flights

- Consider early morning flights as these are often less popular and as a result are often cheaper

- Travel during major events, festivals or holidays, ie, on Easter Day - as many people won't want to travel on these days and the airlines will reduce the cost of fares to fill seats

"It may seem obvious to say, but avoid travelling on days that are likely to be popular travel days like Friday and don't fly late in the afternoon, as flights tend to be the most expensive around this time," Farouk said.

While Farouk has some good tips, the benefit of travel providers like PayLater Travel is that you can book early, locking in the best fare and then pay it off prior to travel.

"Layby travel gives you the benefit of snagging the cheapest prices and then paying off the cost of the tickets at your own pace," Farouk added.
