Tips for Renting a Car in a Foreign Country

  • Written by News Company

We all - hopefully - know the national laws and rules of the road for the country we live in, and drive in, but these aren't universal. If you are planning a trip to a foreign country that will include a Rentabomb - Cheap car hire Brisbane Airport, you will adjust more easily if you research some important points ahead of your trip.

Age Restrictions

Although the legal age for driving in most countries is 18 to 20-years old, car rental agencies have their own age requirements that vary from one agency to another, and from one country to another. In many countries, you won't be able to rent a vehicle if you are younger than 21-years old, and even then drivers younger than 25-years of age will still have to pay a drivers surcharge.

Range Limits

Selecting a vehicle that comes with an unlimited-kilometer offer is ideal for any travelers planning on doing a lot of driving, and saves you from having to carefully monitor the distance you travel. But you could easily find that the car you have rented cannot be driven outside of the city limits, state, or across borders, which can turn out to be a problem if you were planning a road trip across the US or Europe.

Fuel Type

Another factor to consider if you're planning on driving long distances is the type of fuel the vehicle uses. It's quite common for there to be differences in the price of petrol and diesel, and a difference in price between coastal areas and inland. And if you have the option of choosing a hybrid vehicle, you should check to see whether it is suitable for the areas you intend travelling through.

Your Driver's License

No rental agency will hand over the keys to a vehicle without verifying your original driver's license, but have you checked whether you need an International Driver's License? And this is even more critical if you are planning on driving across borders as what applies in one country won't necessarily apply in another. International Driver's Licenses can also only be issued in your resident country, so it needs to be done well ahead of your departure.

Manual or Automatic Transmission

If you're going to be driving on the opposite side of the road in your destination country - and you've never done it before - consider paying a little more for an automatic transmission. This will help reduce stress somewhat as you get used to a new experience, freeing you up to pay more attention to the road and other road users, and staying centered in your lane. It might also be a good idea to have two or registered drivers so you can easily switch when necessary.
