2018 Harness Racing Season Preview

  • Written by News Company

The 2017-18 harness racing season has been spectacular so far with Australasia’s best pacer, Lazarus, showcasing his dominance time and time again. He is already being discussed as one of the very best horses of All Time and if he can capture the Miracle Mile, then he looks a lock for a top 5 position in that debate.

There is still plenty more racing to come for the remainder of the season, including the Miracle Mile, Breeders Crown and Harness Jewels Day. That means plenty of opportunity to provide harness racing tips for the big races.

All eyes turn to Menangle on February 17 as the meeting features two Group 1 sprints – the Allied Express Transport Sprint and the Canadian Club Sprint. Think of these features as Miracle Mile heats with the top two runners from each being invited to compete in the Miracle Mile.

Some of the sport’s biggest names contest the Menangle sprints with Lazarus, Tiger Tara, San Carlo, My Field Marshal and Franco Nelson battling it out in the Canadian Club Sprint while Soho Tribeca, Lennytheshark, Heaven Rocks, Anything For Love and Moonrock lock horns in the Allied Express Transport Sprint.

Menangle will also feature heats for the NSW Derby and NSW Oaks on February 17 with the Finals to be held on February 24. That is the date that harness racing fans need to remember as the Miracle Mile will be run and won then; Lazarus will be looking to stake his claim as the greatest pacer of All Time.

The Ladyship Mile, Bohemia Crystal FFA and Trotters Sprint will also be run at Group 1 level on Miracle Mile Night.

Later in the season, the NZ Derby, WA Derby, Victoria Oaks, NZ Oaks and WA Oaks will help distinguish the top 3YOs from the pack – we will soon know the NSW Derby winner while we already know that QLD pacer Colt Thirty One was the winner of the Victoria Derby and aims to capture the NSW Derby.

June and July are always two massive months for harness racing. The Vicbred Super Series for the 2YO, 3YO and 4YO trotters and pacers boasts plenty of up-and-coming talent which then leads on to the Breeders Crown which is an even bigger series.

The Breeders Crown has a great rivalry between Australia and New Zealand with both countries looking to assert their dominance with some of their very best age-restricted horses. Breeders Crown Day itself will be held at Melton on August 26. There will be heats and semi-finals held in August to determine the fields for the Final.

On par with the Breeders Crown, is Harness Jewels Day in New Zealand as the Kiwis showcase their best 2YO, 3YO and 4YO talent. It will be held at Cambridge on June 2 and is a must-watch for any serious harness racing fan as they continue to smash the clock over the mile.

That is just some of the great harness racing action to look forward to for the remainder of the season.
