  • Written by Susan Ewington

Noosa is known for its diverse calendar of events and its newest event, the Noosa International Film Festival will see local, Australian and international talent on the big screen in Noosa from 3-6 November 2016.

The festival will present a diverse program including over 140 short and feature length films, a classic silent film, an environmental documentary and an industry guest event; across four towns and five venues from the coastal to hinterland towns of Noosa.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said his organisation was delighted to sponsor the new event and looked forward to welcoming movie buffs to Noosa.

“The Festival is a great cultural addition to Noosa's calendar of events and will no doubt attract visitors to Noosa wanting to take part in this inaugural and boutique film festival”.

Festival Organisers say the quality of the Noosa International Film Festival program has surpassed expectations for the festival's first year.

“The announcement of the Festival Program is an exciting opportunity to place Noosa on the global film festival circuit” said Peter Chenoweth, Festival Director.

“We are confident that the quality and diversity of the Festival Program will entertain and delight film-goers.”

The Noosa International Film Festival will screen an all-premiere line up of new release feature films as part of its World Cinema program, including five Australian films and a Queensland premiere.

Melody (Belgium, 2014) is the Australian premiere drama in French & English directed by Bernard Bellefroid and starring Australian actress, Rachael Blake who will be in Noosa for the premiere. Melody will be the opening night film on Friday 4 November.

The World Cinema program will screen at the BCC Cinemas on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday.

The 132 top-rated short films from 31 countries will screen over Saturday and Sunday at The J Theatre Noosa, Eumundi School of Arts Hall and Pomona Majestic Theatre.

Also screening at the Pomona Majestic Theatre will be the 1920 classic silent horror, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, directed by Robert Wiene accompanied by a traditional pianist.

The Noosa Integrated Catchment Association endorsed Ecoflicks event will showcase official selections from the youth and open short film competition followed by a presentation of prize awards to competition winners. As part of the event, NIFF will also screen environmental documentary, SEED: The Untold Story, a Queensland premiere. Ecoflicks will take place on Sunday 6th at the Cooroy State School Hall.

Inside Cinema will carry the Festival's industry stream and will include the special guest event, An evening with John Seale at The J Noosa on Thursday 3 November. Presented by Academy Award-winning Australian cinematographer, John Seale whom is known for his work on films such as Rain Man, Gorillas in the Mist, The English Patient, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and more recently Mad Max: Fury Road.
