What You’ll Love…
The Trek — Immerse yourself in the emerald beauty of Tasmania’s hinterland
Draped in rainforest-covered slopes with glistening waterfalls, Mount Field National Park’s alpine wilderness provides a tranquil view and soundtrack for your ascension to the Lady Barron Falls Circuit. Meander to the magnificently tiered, 45m-high Russell Falls, then enjoy a short steep climb to Horseshoe, before passing beneath towering swamp gums to the secluded Lady Barron Falls.
Journey over 90 minutes return to Junee Cave, part of an extensive underground limestone karst system and reputedly home to Australia’s deepest cave at 375m. Stand in awe of the glittering waterfall that cascades out of its mouth.
Surround yourself in the alpine majesty of the magnificent Mount Field National Park as you venture along the Tarn Shelf Walk, rated by your guides as ‘right up there’ amongst the best in the region. This stunning immersion will take you to the lesser-visited, higher reaches of the park, climbing through alpine plateaus, past a picturesque series of small glacial lakes and via rustic huts. From the summit, you will be privy to some of the most incredible and lesser-seen views over the forested landscape — it’s especially mesmerising in autumn when the native fagus tree changes colour, creating an oil painting-like vista.
Trace the Port Davey Track through wet forest and open button grass plains, and meander off the trail for a taster of the scratchy native scrub the South West area is renowned for. Ascend to the Red Knoll Lookout, offering shimmering Lake Pedder views and 360° panoramas from the summit — with the opportunity to plunge into the glassy waters of Lake Pedder on the return down the mountainside.
Experience the otherworldly beauty of the pristine Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park on the Creepy Crawly Nature Trail and get lost in the breathtaking dense old-growth rainforest of Florentine Valley, where you will be treated to the sight of a plethora of unique slow-growing plants and jaw-droppingly tall eucalyptus.
Cap off your final day with a short climb to Tiger Range Lookout, where views are afforded across Florentine Valley’s green wavelike canopy and the nearby mountains of The Thumbs, The Needles and Mount Field National Park, before an optional Timbs Track walk or return to Marriott’s Falls.
The Accommodation — A unique rustic gem in the upper Derwent Valley
Surrounded by World Heritage Wilderness Areas and national parks, Giants' Table and Cottages will make you feel like the world has fallen away as you revel in the serene silence of the forest, crickets' song in the evenings and the sparkle of the stars overhead – clearer than you ever thought possible from the city.
